General Meandering Post

Looks like the weather for the coming three day weekend at KCRF will be phenominal. Highs in the mid-60s, lows in the upper 40s. Of course, the two drawbacks are: 1) surviving three days, and 2) Columbus Day, the annual hosting of the Future Felons of America.

Anybody know of any good social stuff going on after Faire this weekend? I’ve been stuck in the house all week, and I want to cut loose a bit.

In other news, I went to the bookstore earlier this week and picked up a couple of goodies, including the first novel from a new imprint doing good old-fashioned hard-boiled crime fiction, Hard Case Crime. The first novel in the line is from Stephen King, and is a tribute to the days of Raymond Chandler, Dashiel Hammet and Mickey Spillane. I’m in heaven. Hell, even the books themselves are made to look like old paperbacks:

I also scored a major coup in the bargain bin. My favorite manga series, Five Star Stories, which I had been reading occasionally in Japanese since the late 80s, had been released in oversized English translation editions. I had picked up the first 3 volumes when I was living in NYC. Well, Hastings had volumes 4 through 12 in the bargain bin, priced at 1.99 each (rather than the 10 bucks per that they usually go for). Kick-ass Renaissance-themed Giant Robot manga for 80% off? Yes please.

I mean, Jesus….look at this:

  1. Well, tonight is the benefit where a lot of Rennies could be to party. Then there’s tomorrow night’s fundraiser on site after close.

  2. The Hard Case stuff is excellent. I’ve been picking them up here and there for a few months now, and joined their mailing list just to get access to their giveaways (I think they give away something like 10 copies of a book per month to mailing list subscribers).

The reprints of the old stuff are kickass, and King really nails the tone in his new release this month. Enjoy!

Now if only someone would do the same for the old pulp adventure novels…

(or have they, and I’m just clueless? I know you’re a big pulp fiend as well, so if you’ve got a line on a source for them, hook a brother up, would you?)

  3. you have energy after hours. wow. (I’m old)

But yeah about the after-hours concert. And there are usually heaps of rennies at both Evergreens and Mazzios for dindin.

Just get used to the constant hum like a swarm of angry bees all weekend – it’s NASCAR at the track on 24 and you can hear it from site. And the traffic will suck like a great sucking thing.

    Your wish is my command:

Adventure House sells pulp reprints…including a regularly-produced reprint magazine called High Adventure, a magazine reprinting the old G-8 And His Battle Aces pulps, various pulp reprints, and more. The website is a bit wonky at times, but that’s my source. (They also used to do a reprint magazine of The Spider, but the license wasn’t renewed…still, you might find some somewhere. It was available to comic stores via Diamond)

  5. I know about the NASCAR thing (I’m local, and have done this Festival many, many times).

It will actually work out, because our show contains a NASCAR joke.
