A cartogram of the 2008 election (as it currently stands), where one square equals one electoral vote (which, remember, are based on population):

There’s the “Center-Right Nation” that the right-wing pundits are whining about this morning.

Some things to consider:

In 1980, the patron saint of the right-wing, Ronald Reagan, won his mandate with 50.7% of the popular vote.

In 2004, as most of you will remember, Bush claimed a “clear mandate” with 50.7% of the popular vote, and record turn-out.

Barack Obama has won the election with 52% of the popular vote, and shattering the record turn-out, with more people casting votes for him (over 63 million) than any other candidate in the history of this country.

Really, the logic is simple: If the right-wing says that Obama is a ‘socialist’, and the overwhelming majority of a record turn-out in this country voted him into office….how in the hell can we be a “center-right nation?”

Just listen to the sound of it.

President Obama.

I just said to the folks here (, , and ) that I feel like I did on 9/11 — but in a good way. The same sense of history unfolding before my eyes, the sense that the world has just changed perceptably, my pulse going like a triphammer, tears in my eyes….but for positive, glorious reasons.

As I type this, Colorado and Florida just went. LANDSLIDE.

I’ll type more tomorrow. Right now, I’m going to watch history.

The election, in a pair of examples.

First, read this. I’m not ashamed to admit that it made me get all teary-eyed.

Second, Fox News is breathlessly reporting that Black Panthers (one of whom was “wielding a nightstick”) are “intimidating voters” in Philly — and presented this video of a “scuffle” between the Panthers and a Fox News crew.

The “scuffle?” — Two African-Americans (neither of whom are wielding nightsticks), calmly asking the Fox Assclown to move away from the polling place, to the legal distance for electioneering or reporting.

Some “scuffle.” Gods, the fascists are fucking *terrified* today.
