Since I’m sure it’s going to be swallowed by the Middle East war stories:
The American Bar Association (that well-known bastion of radical liberals…..er….um….) has issued a report saying that Bush’s ‘signing statements’ violate the Constitution and erode democracy.
This is the ABA saying this, people. Historically suit-and-tie conservatives.
Wake up.
I don’t think that signing statements, which presidents have done for years, are in and of themselves the problem. The problem lies in how Bush is using signing statements to widen his power within the government structure.

The article says that Bush has had over 800 signing statements, compared to a total of 600 for all other presidents combined. I think they’re more concerned with the abuse of power than the power itself.
I agree, it is the proportion that you mention that seems to be driving the objections.
