Life Update

General update of stuff going on…

With Samhain on Monday, I took the first step today in my plan for the coming year: the complete overhaul and from-the-keel-up refit of my body. I went to the dentist, and began what will, unfortunately, be a long series of visits to take care of all of the work I need done. I’ve let it go far too long. First thing on the schedule that we worked out today: A surgical extraction of a molar, on November 8th. After that, I probably have a couple of root canals and a few general fillings to get done as well. The teeth and the weight….that’s my focus for the year.

Heard from my mother earlier this week that my grandmother is being released from the hospital and sent home into hospice care, because there’s nothing more that can be done. She had a series of heart attacks and strokes over the past three years, and so, essentially, it’s like she’s gone already….but it’s hitting me pretty hard. My grandmother is a huge part of why I’m a writer. She recognized my interests early, and did everything she could to feed those interests every chance she got. She’s in her 80s now, and she sure as hell wouldn’t want to keep going like a shadow of herself, unable to even communicate. I said my goodbyes the last time I saw her (right before we moved back here), but it’s going to hurt not being able to make it back one last time.

Is there anything social going on this weekend, either secular or Samhain-related? Drop me a line if so….I could certainly use the distraction.

It’s been a long time since I’ve done anything to observe Samhain…I want to do something this year, though, as I’ve been feeling removed from my faith, and I need to recharge.

In happier news, in the mail yesterday I received an advance proof copy of ‘s debut novel, “The Lies of Locke Lamora”, which is coming out soon in the UK (and “already sold in a major deal to Bantam books in the US”, or so it informs me on the back cover). Not only am I eager to begin reading, but it’s also lighting a fire under my ass to get something done and sold.

  1. Good for you. I really need to get a new dentist. I haven’t been to one since I quit my job in KC. Errr. Yeah, that’s embarassing.

I’m sorry to hear about your grandmother. =( *hug*

  2. Trying again…

My teeth hurt in sympathy…and that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it. Me too; I’ve put it off for oh, six years now and gotta do it before something really serious happens. It ain’t gonna be pretty at all. And I’m a big chicken, having put several dentists children through college and bought them sailboats besides, I have no doubt.

Anyway…sorry about your grandmother *hugs* I’m glad that you had her emotionsl support, that’s very cool. It is never easy and I still miss my mother but, oh hell, there’s nothing really to say except that I empathize.

  3. My sympathies for the situation with regard to your grandmother. Losing one to whom you felt close is extremely difficult. To lose that person to a long downward slide is loss of greater magnitude.

    D.

  4. Yeah, I haven’t been to the dentist since I was in college.*blush* Of course, I need to get a permanent job that has insurance first. . .I really, *really* want to get Invisalign braces. My teeth need straightening, but with all the performing I do I can’t really have standard braces. I think my top incisors will also need filing down once they’re straight, otherwise I’ll look like a bunny wabbit.*Elmer Fudd chuckle*

  5. Things to do this weekend. . .

    Uhm, Phantom’s Feaste?*ducks and runs*

I’m sorry about your grandmother. Mine has suffered a few strokes, but fortunately a chunk of her vocabulary was spared, especially her more colorful expressions, which she only uses when she can’t think of a simple word. We’re all, including her, able to laugh about it when she does it. She’s lost so much of herself, though, that I know it can only be a matter of time. She used to be a huge matriarch, so now it just makes me sad when I let myself stop to think about it.

I’ve been rather amiss in my holidays as well. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever been to what you’d consider as an actual ritual. I know, I’m ashamed.*hangs head* I keep getting the Llewellyn calendar so that I can keep track of them, but never end up doing anything for them.

  6. I did the surgical extraction of teeth earlier this year (when I still had dental insurance) and it worked out very well, much better than I could’ve hoped for.

As for dropping weight, I’m right there with you. During faire I was doing mostly aerobic maintenance workouts, but now that faire is done, I’m back to more rigorous workouts three days a week with and . A good gym and motivation to attend regularly is a huge benefit.

The hard part for me has been taking the time to prepare better food choices.

    Good luck, man.

  7. Hey, good luck with the overhaul and subsequent refit. It’s an eye doctor I’d need to be seeing, rather than a dentist–at least the wife doesn’t think it’s a good idea to go fifteen years between visits and prescriptions. :)
Sorry to hear about your grandmother, though. I remember all the stories you told about her. Always sounded like a very cool lady.
Good luck with lighting a fire, as well. Now get writing!

  8. I have only been to one once, to get my wisdom teeth out. My parents never brought me as a kid because they thought it was too expensive. As soon as the baby is born, though, I am making an appointment.

  9. I agree with what said. You always did tell the greatest stories about your grandmother! I did weight watchers after my first baby and it worked quite well and was not nearly as difficult as one would imagine. All the men always lost weight much more easily than the women, too. :) might be a useful thing to check into. Kudos to you for taking the first step!

  10. Ouch! Sorry to hear about your grandmother, and your dental work… it sounds sucktacular. Good for deciding to tough it out and endure it now rather than let it get even worse over the next few years.

Also glad to hear the book arrived. Enjoy, hopefully!

  11. yikes – that was one hell of a post. Dentists = pain = no-thank-you. I haven’t been in quite a while. Need to go.

I completely sympathize about your grandmother, having lost mine last year. Good news is, she and my grandfather keep showing up in my sleep to argue. I take that as a sign they’re alright wherever they’re at. ;)

  12. My dinner for plans for Samhain seem to now only Nikki and myself since Kris and Mike have to work. I know you’ll be around here all weekend but if you want to join us for pot roast, you’re more than welcome. :)

  13. All the best with the overhaul, Gareth. Mid-30s seems like a time when lots of us take stock… Yeah, leaving it a while between dentist visits is a Bad Idea, as I found out when I went after a couple of years and needed A Lot of fillings.

I originally said good wishes to your grandmother, but after reading further on I’ll say good journey to her and warm memories to you.
