More Lies Revealed, and Impeachment
The White House knew before Katrina hit that New Orleans would be flooded. According to Homeland Security reports that have now been released by Senate investigators, the White House was informed that the storm would lead to levee breaks and massive flooding. So much for Bush’s televised statement: “”I don’t think anyone anticipated the breach of the levees.”
Add another lie to the pile, kids. Another one that will be ignored by conservative apologists…mostly because they can’t use the usual spin. I mean, “We’re at war against terrorists….the President has the authority in wartime to allow a major city to flood” just doesn’t have that neccessary ring of plausibility, now does it?
In related news (Senate investigations), this warmed my heart: An online conservative mag is reporting that sources within the administration are telling them that the White House is bracing for Impeachment hearings in Congress. This is coming from conservatives, folks…not the usual wishful-thinking from liberals.
A quote from the article:
“Administration sources said the charges are expected to include false reports to Congress as well as Mr. Bush’s authorization of the National Security Agency to engage in electronic surveillance inside the United States without a court warrant. This included the monitoring of overseas telephone calls and e-mail traffic to and from people living in the United States without requisite permission from a secret court.
[…]
“Our arithmetic shows that a majority of the committee could vote against the president,” the source said. “If we work hard, there could be a tie.”
Too early to get my hopes up….but it would be nice to see the Rule of Law return to this nation.
Don’t Let Them
So yeah—Bush defended his warrantless wiretaps at the K-State speech today. You can see the tactic the Junta is going to now use….It’s not “warrantless wiretapping”….no, no….it’s “the Terrorist Surveillance Program.”
And it’s not “suicide bomber”, it’s “homicide bomber.” And it’s not “insurgent” it’s “terrorist.”
And it’s not “invading a country that didn’t attack us, using lies about non-existent Weapons of Mass Destruction,” it’s “Freedom on the March.”
Depressing.
Gotta love how CNN frames the story, too: “President Bush and other officials Monday intensified their defense of a domestic surveillance program that supporters say protects against terrorism and critics say threatens civil liberties.”
There it is again: Security vs. Civil Liberties. The absolutely false dichotomy. Because it’s not about the program threatening civil liberties….it’s about the fact that it is AGAINST THE FUCKING LAW.
Don’t let the goalposts move, people. Publicly correct those who promulgate the Big Lie. That sentence should read: “…that supporters say protects against terrorism, and critics know is a violation of our laws.”
Don’t let them forget it. Shout it in the street if you have to.
