The new series of Doctor Who premiered in the UK this past weekend…
My first thought upon watching was that RTD has spent too much time working on The Sarah Jane Adventures. This episode felt like it had been lifted, whole-cloth, from that show.
It just seemed an odd choice to me — to lead off a season with a whimsical episode that seemed more suited to a middle-of-the-run breather.
To my mind, premieres should be big, or flashy, or exciting — a declaration of “we’re back, and isn’t this brilliant!” Instead, we got cute “monsters”, comedy moments, and everything short of a Scooby-Doo hallway-doors gag.
I am desperately hoping that this means the rest of the series will be intense, and RTD was giving us the whimsy early….
