Friday Music

First things first. With the discussion of “Mahna Mahna” that occurred on several friends’ journals yesterday, I had to track this down: It’s a mash-up of Cake’s version of “Mahna Mahna” with Kanye West’s “Golddigger.” It’s goofy, it’s silly….and it oddly works. DJ Lenlow – “Kanye Mahna”

Now, we move on to a couple of songs which make me think of Summer….now that we’re in June (4 days from my birthday, in fact), it’s Summer to me (despite the fact that it’s still Spring until the 21st). The first song is a brilliant piece by Norman Cook (AKA Fatboy Slim). He took a snippet of Jim Morrison vocals (from Morrison’s “American Prayer” solo poem recordings) and worked it into a phenominal electronic track. It starts slow and builds…and once the tempo kicks in, I was hooked. Fatboy Slim – “Sunset (Bird of Prey)”

The second summer-track is my favorite song from the Rolling Stones. Featuring what I consider to be Keith Richards’ best guitar work, and a stand-out performance by back-up singer Merry Clayton (who was a Gospel-trained singer who had once been one of Ray Charles’ Raylettes), which manages to eclipse Jagger’s main vocals. Rolling Stones – “Gimme Shelter.”

While we’re on the “classic rock” stuff, I’ll post this, which is my favorite song from Harry “I can’t live, if livin’ is without you” Nilsson. Most of you probably know this song from its appearance in Martin Scorcese’s Goodfellas, where it formed part of the “Henry tweaking hard on Coke” montage. (That’s where I first discovered it, in fact) Nilsson – “Jump Into The Fire”

I discovered this recording this week, and of course, with the week I had, it turns out that this is from a group that has since broken up. Naturally. I love this, though. It’s part of a Peel Session from the BBC, so this was recorded live in the studio. Field Mice – “Annoint.” I’ll need to track down some other stuff. At least with the band now defunct, there’s a set limit of what’s available. :)

A few weeks ago, I posted a track from the forthcoming album by Midlake — a song called “Young Bride”, which quite a few people liked, based on comments and emails. Here’s another track from the same album, and it’s just as beautiful. I need to get this album. Midlake – “We Gathered In Spring.”

A really cool, jazzy downtempo electronica track by Skopic, who apparently is somebody like me, who just produces stuff out of his house. This is very nifty. Skopic – “Allow.”

Lastly, for fans of the non-English stuff, I have another francophonic delight for you, from the French group, Prototypes. Punky, electronic-tinged pop, in French. I like it. Prototypes – “Je Ne Te Connais Pas.”

There you go…another 8 tracks for you to enjoy. More next week.

HEX premiere tonight…

For those of you with BBC America, tonight they’re showing the premiere of the supernatural series Hex, which originally aired on Sky One in the UK.

From the website:

“Set in a remote British boarding school, Hex is the story of Cassandra “Cassie” Hughes (Christina Cole), a shy social outcast who discovers she has unique powers that provide a terrifying link to the past.

Longing to be popular, but only truly loved by her lesbian roommate Thelma (Jemima Rooper, Kinky Boots), Cassie goes to great lengths to be accepted by the “in crowd” at her cliquish English boarding school, Medenham Hall. Thelma, who couldn’t care less about being ostracized, is appalled at Cassie’s attempts to fit in with the superficial classmates who treat them so badly.

While stopping for a cigarette in one of the old buildings on campus, Cassie’s future is forever altered when she unearths hidden ancient artifacts – a discovery that leaves her cursed with supernatural powers that have their roots deep in Medenham Hall’s history. As she begins to recognize the extent of her new abilities, Cassie is bewildered and terrified by the visions that haunt her. She soon discovers that there are certain advantages to being a student endowed with mystical powers, when she learns how to manipulate the people and situations around her.

However, Cassie realizes that her new gift comes with a price. Her tragic fate is sealed with the appearance of Azazeal (Michael Fassbender, Band of Brothers), the leader of a group of fallen angels who were banished from heaven for tasting the pleasures of mortal women. Azazeal kidnaps Thelma in a bid to get to the one human sacrifice he’s really concerned with, Cassie. But when Cassie confronts him and demands to see her friend, it’s Thelma who pays the ultimate price.”

Could be crap, but the commercials they’ve been showing make it look like a more adult version of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, so we’ll be giving it a shot. (9 central, if you’re interested)

DIY Impeachment

ImpeachForPeace.org, has researched a method for impeaching the President using a little known and rarely used part of the Rules of the House of Representatives (“Jefferson’s Manual”). This document actually empowers individual citizens to initiate the impeachment process themselves.

Before the House Judiciary Committee can put together the Articles of Impeachment, someone must initiate the impeachment procedure. Most often, this occurs when members of the House pass a resolution. Another method outlined in the manual, however, is for individual citizens to submit a memorial for impeachment.

ImpeachForPeace has made a DIY Impeachment Memorial, which can be downloaded here, making it possible for Americans to do what our representatives have been unwilling to do. The idea is for so many people to submit the Memorial that it cannot be ignored.

Feel free to download it, print out TWO copies, fill in your relevant information in the blanks (name, State, etc.), and send in two letters today (One to the Speaker of the House, and the other to John Conyers of the House Judiciary).

Hold on to another copy of the two letters until October 12th–when ImpeachForPeace wants a mass mailing. To quote them: “That’s right — to make a big impact, we’re having everyone send it in on the same date. We hope to flood the Judiciary Committee and John Conyers office with sacks of mail and cause a newsworthy event to further pressure the Congress to act on the memorials.”

Of course, for this to work, it would require that we still be living in a Constitutional Republic….something that I’m not entirely convinced of, any longer. But at least it’s something.
