When I was a kid, I read DC comics, mostly — apart from Star Wars and Micronauts from Marvel.
Then, as I moved into pre-teen and teen years, I became much more of a Marvel reader — X-Men, Daredevil, Alpha Flight, Moon Knight, Wolverine, New Mutants, etc. They seemed more “realistic” to me, as dopey as that sounds now. No fake cities — New York rather than Metropolis. Powers born of genetic mutation, etc.
During my adult re-entry into being a regular comics reader, I have stuck more with the archetypal icons of DC, and the neo-retro independent titles like Astro City. They seem more mythic, and maybe that’s what I want.
My Marvel reading has been limited to trade paperback collections of Marvel’s Ultimate line…mostly because it was a stand-alone re-invention of the continuity, and often reinterpreted stuff I had read in my Marvel days.
However, I was just looking at something that might make me start buying a monthly Marvel title again:
Marvel is re-launching Moon Knight, and has an 11-page preview on their website.
The best lines?
“I told him that I don’t wear white to hide myself.
I wear it so they’ll see me coming.
So they’ll know who it is.
‘Cause when they see the white, it doesn’t matter how good a target I am. Their hands shake so bad, they couldn’t hit the moon.
But I never told him the other reason. I never told him that a Priest doesn’t change the color of his investments to suit himself…..No, he wears them proudly.”
