The Dark Is Rising

Apparently, Susan Cooper’s book is being filmed by 20th Century Fox — which is pretty freakin’ cool. I love that book, ever since it was given to me as a gift by back in the dawn of pre-history.

Even cooler: They’ve cast Christopher Eccleston as The Rider….the main villain of the story.

  1. Sounds interesting, and what a promising cast! I have not read the book, but I have heard of it. And, you know, Christopher Eccleston! Woot! :D

  2. (although, now that I think about it, my head is filled with Merriman Lyon telling Will that The Dark are a bunch of “hooplehead cocksuckers.”)

  3. Wow… I’ve just started introducing this series to my son! This will give us one to keep the tradition going once Harry Potter has ended! How awesome is this?!?!

This is one of the first series I ever picked up on my own when I first got my library card. I seriously love this series.

  4. Ian McShane (from what I see of his pictures on imdb) would be… okay. I’ve always seen Gumerry as taller thinner, bordering on gaunt. And he MUST have the wild white hair and moustaches…

  5. That cast list is the ‘YAY’, although one sentence did give me pause:

Smith is playing the teen’s older brother, an edgy young man with piercings and tattoos who questions their father’s authority.

Because 1) The book centers rather particularly around Will’s eleventh birthday, and 2) I don’t recall any of his five surviving older brothers being edgy, pierced, tattooed or questioning their father’s authority – although one of them is an art student. :)

  6. Hm, interesting. I vaguely remember this series. But I’ll certainly give any fantasy movie a shot, provided it doesn’t look like D&D or Eragon. :)
